The Trench for Men

The men’s puffer coat (see some of the best picks here) is on trend this fall/winter.  But, the trench is a classic coat that you will wear for years to come.  Ladies, if your boyfriend, husband, dad, brother, etc., regularly throws on a beat up, old jacket, get him a timeless trench coat.

Black and gray trenches are very versatile since they go with most clothing.  They also look dessier than the standard khaki coat; the darker colors are perfect for office or special event wear.  A khaki trench can be worn to the office or at night, but also look great during the day.

If you, or the man your buying for, is a traditional type guy, go for the classic trench: mid thigh to knee length, belted, double breasted, large lapels and cotton or wool depending on your climate.  There are also trenches with modern detailing like draped collars, fabric treatments, funnel collars and more.

Cold climates demand a longer, wool trench.  But, you may consider a cotton trench for fall and spring, as well.  You will find the trench is your go-to coat since it is classic and easy to wear.

Fit is important, so try on the coat with the type of clothing you will wear under it (sweater, dress shirt, blazer, etc.).  Make sure the coat is not too tight nor too big in the shoulders.  Coats that are too big in the shoulders and torso will make you appear larger than you are; tailoring is key for a sleek look.

Trench coats were born out of practicality in the First World War by the British and French armies.  Aquascutum and Burberry both claim the trench as their own; Aquascutum says their design dates to the 1850′s, while Thomas Burberry submitted the design to the British Army in 1901.  The coats were not a mandatory part of the uniforms, but many soldiers wore them and continued to wear them in civilian life.  The name comes from trench warfare; soldiers needed the protection from the elements while in the trenches.

Now, trench coats are a staple for the fashionable.  The long coats keep you warm in the fall/winter, they protect your clothes from the elements and they are always in style.  Khaki is the classic color of the trench, but you can find them in a variety of colors now.  You can also find detailing and cuts that make them more feminine and flattering.

When looking for a trench, make sure it is roomy enough to accommodate layers and sweaters.  Also, button the coat all the way to the top to ensure there is enough room in the bust.  If you live in a mild climate, a shorter trench is a great option.  Besides the traditional wool and cashmere, there are also cotton trenches available.
